Brian Kerr backs Buddies to stay grounded in pursuit of top-six place

Assistant boss Brian Kerr insists St Mirren will not get ahead of themselves in their fight to secure a top-six place in the William Hill Premiership.

The Buddies hammered Kilmarnock 5-1 to move within a point of Hearts in sixth.

Caolan Boyd-Munce netted a double and there were also goals for Roland Idowu, Mark O’Hara and Declan John as the hosts ran riot at the SMISA Stadium.

It was their first victory over the Rugby Park side in 12 meetings, setting up a grandstand conclusion ahead of the league split.

Stephen Robinson’s men will travel to Dens Park to face Dundee next weekend, before rounding off their pre-split fixtures at home to Ross County.

“We know what we want to achieve, but Dundee is the most important game for us now,” Kerr said.

“It’s solely on us now, we can’t look too far ahead or at other results.

“We need to make sure we go and take care of the game next week and from there we’ll look at the next steps.”

Saints were without the goal threat of Toyosi Olusanya and Mikael Mandron as they hit five goals in a league match for the first time since January 2021.

However, Kerr was delighted as their midfielders stepped up to score four of their five goals against Derek McInnes’ men.

He added: “We do work on midfield shooting, believe it or not.

“I know sometimes it doesn’t look like that, but sometimes you get these games where everything goes.

“The midfielders score their goals, strikers do their job and defenders do their bit at the other end – everything came together and that’s the most pleasing thing for us.”

Kilmarnock boss McInnes rued the difference that less than a year makes as they crashed to a humiliating defeat.

In May 2024, Killie defeated St Mirren in Paisley to clinch European football but Saturday’s crushing defeat leaves them a point above Dundee in the relegation play-off position.

McInnes insists it is time for everyone to pull together in order to escape their current predicament.

“We could do with that love for the players, nobody is expecting anything other than what we got at full-time,” he said.

“We always bring a good support to St Mirren. This time last year, we cemented fourth spot with a brilliant victory in the sunshine – this was the absolute opposite of that.

“We’re determined to give them a few highlights between now and the end of the season, but it’s clear we need everyone of a Kilmarnock persuasion to stick together.”
