Luis Enrique believes Paris St Germain’s Champions League campaign would make a “great thriller or horror film” as they prepare to face Inter Milan in Saturday’s final.

Les Parisiens’ bumpy continental run started with a difficult patch of form in the league phase of the competition, where they picked up only four points from their opening five games.

They then turned their fortunes around to win the next three matches – including a 4-2 victory over Manchester City – to qualify for the knockout phase play-offs, where Luis Enrique’s side claimed a 10-0 aggregate win over Brest to reach the last 16.

From there, PSG beat three Premier League sides in Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal to secure a spot in the competition’s showpiece and Luis Enrique insisted his team now need to “finish the job” as they search for a maiden Champions League trophy.

“If we were to analyse everything that has happened in the Champions League this season, I think it would make a great thriller or horror film because it has had a bit of everything,” Luis Enrique said in an interview on the UEFA Champions League website.

“Through all the league phase matches, especially at home, we deserved better results but they just didn’t come. Our finishing was almost ridiculous – it’s very rare to see a team at this level with such low effectiveness.

“The table showed one thing but what we were feeling was something else entirely. We felt that the team was doing a lot of things well. Once our campaign began to settle and we regained our sharpness in front of goal, I think the team hit some really strong numbers.

“We’ve kept improving, we’ve kept growing. We should be proud of what we’ve achieved. However, we have to finish the job because what we’re really aiming for is to make history.”

PSG meet Inter in Saturday’s final which takes place at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

The Serie A side reached the last 16 straight away after finishing fourth in the league table and earned victories over Feyenoord and Bayern Munich before a late fightback saw them beat Barcelona in a thrilling semi-final tie.

Simone Inzaghi has now led Inter to a second Champions League final in three seasons and believes his team have learned from their defeat by Manchester City two years ago.

He said: “We remember that final like it was yesterday, when we matched a very strong team in Manchester City. On balance, we probably deserved to at least take it to extra time.

“That experience was important – our performance in such a high-level game helped us learn a lot about what we’re capable of.”

When asked what it would mean to win, Inzaghi added: “It would be the crowning achievement of a great job that started four years ago.

“We know it will be a very important final and we are desperate to make our fans really happy. We will give it our all.”
