Hibs boss Nick Montgomery says it would be ‘fantastic for the club’ if former full-back Josh Doig completes his move to Marseille this month.
It has been reported that the Hibees would be due a sizable sell-on fee if their academy graduate is to move on from Serie A outfit Hellas Verona this month.
Marseille are favourites to sign the Scottish international despite interest from Rangers, Sassuolo and Torino.
Nick Montgomery is preparing to bolster his squad this January as his side looks to consolidate a spot in the league’s top five.
He was quizzed about how the sell-on fee from Doig’s sale could strengthen the club’s spending power at his media conference this morning. He said:
“Yeah I heard about that yesterday, it’s hard for me to really comment on anything like that until it actually happens.
“Speaking with Brian McDermott this week and Ian Gordon, they are hopeful that will go through but look I don’t know if that will change a lot this window.
“I know the club did invest in the off-season and in the signings they brought in the last window.
“If that happens, I’ll probably pick up the phone to Ian (Gordon) and see if he can chuck in another few quid in the budget.
“I’m not sure it all comes in straight away or again what the details are but that’s fantastic for the club and Josh (Doig).
“We want to get back to being a club that develops young players and obviously sells them overseas because the sell-on you’re talking about there can only help our budget going forward.
“It shows that coming to Hibs can be a big platform for you to go onto big things and again that helps us reinvest as well.”
