Rangers slumped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of a ruthless Lyon side in the Europa League.

Whilst Pierre Sage’s side looked vulnerable at the back the hosts were only able to penetrate the defensive line once, a stark contrast to the lethal finishing of the French outfit who ran out comfortable winners thanks to a brace each from Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette.

Eight minutes and Rangers should have been ahead when the ball fell to Vaclav Cerny who contrived to send his effort into the stand with the goal gaping.

The home side would almost immediately rue their missed opportunity when minutes later Lyon were  in front. Rayan Cherki danced through the Light Blues defence before Fofana picked the ball up on the left and bent a cultured effort beyond Jack Butland.

Tom Lawrence had the sides on level terms with 13 minutes on the clock after he followed up on a loose ball inside the area, adding to his strike against Hibs last weekend.

The game swung on its head once again when Connor Barron gave away a slack ball to Fofana who found Captain Lacazette to dispatch expertly after 19 minutes.

It looked as though the match was heading for the break with the teams separated by a single goal but Lacazette stepped up once again to add another for his side. The 33-year old picked the ball up all of 25 yards from goals before unleashing a wonder strike into the top right hand corner.

Fofana turned the ball home 10 minutes into the second half to add his second and Lyon’s fourth of the evening.
