Stuart Kettlewell hopes he may have uncovered a hidden gem in the form of Kofi Balmer.

The 23-year old defender was a summer pick-up from Crystal Palace and found the net to mark an impressive debut as Motherwell cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory on their return to competitive action against Edinburgh City.

“Kofi is one we’re obviously delighted to get in the door” said the Well boss, full of praise for his new recruit. “He gives us another option across the back line.”

Asked on whether the defender could be the latest unearthed talent to ply their trade at Fir Park, the manager was optimistic in his assessment for the Northern Ireland under-21 international:

“We hope so, that is basically what we do at the football club. We don’t sign the perfect player. We don’t sign anyone that has necessarily banged in 15 goals or who has been an absolute stalwart at their club.

“I think we’ve been fortunate in bringing Liam Gordon to the football club, he’s probably one that fits into that category of someone that’s been a captain, had success and played a lot of games of football but they’re rarities for us.

“That’s not disrespectful to the guys we bring to the club, we just think they have so many more stages to go throughout their career and we feel it has to be our job to try and unearth that.”

The defender showed his attacking prowess against the League Two outfit and the manager revealed he has another secret weapon that the Fir Park faithful may see utilised this season:

“We know he’s got this ridiculously long throw, which is never something I want to play to but it’s something we could use over the course of a season”

Motherwell wrapped up the afternoon with goals from Dan Casey and Stephen O’Donnell to mark a winning start to the 24/25 campaign.
