Diego Simeone’s son Giuliano scored his first goal for Atletico Madrid to help them return to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph over Las Palmas.

Following Madrid’s defeat to Real Betis last week, Simeone’s side needed a win to ensure they kept pace with Real Madrid and Barcelona towards the top of LaLiga and claimed the victory to climb up to third, whilst also retaining their unbeaten home status.

Simeone opened the scoring eight minutes before the break but Atletico were made to wait till the 83rd minute before they could relax as Alexander Sorloth bagged his fourth goal of the season.

The home side started quickly as Pablo Barrios’ effort from inside the box needed to be saved by Jasper Cillessen.

Las Palmas almost grabbed the opener when Sandro Ramirez found former Wolves man Fabio Silva, who fired straight at Jan Oblak.

It was Atleti who opened the scoring when 21-year-old Simeone latched on to Nahuel Molina’s long ball and finished emphatically to give the hosts the lead before the interval.

Atletico continued to push for a second goal, but missed several opportunities from the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Julian Alvarez and Clement Lenglet to keep Las Palmas in the contest.

But the Riyadh Air Metropolitano blew a sigh of relief as Sorloth sealed victory with seven minutes to play.

Rodrigo De Paul unlocked the Las Palmas defence with a wonderful through-ball and the Norway international made his way into the box and smashed into the top corner to hand Atletico the three points.
