Stephen Robinson’s St Mirren returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Ross County at the SMISA Stadium this afternoon.
The opener arrived in the 52nd minute when VAR retrospectively awarded a goal following a goalmouth scramble. The last touch came off County defender Ryan Leak before edging over the goal line.
Jonah Ayunga then doubled the Buddies advantage four minutes later with his first goal since returning from nearly a year out with an ACL injury. The forward finished off a fluid counterattack by smashing the ball underneath the arms of County goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw from the edge of the area.
St Mirren end their run of three consecutive defeats and now make it eight wins from eleven home matches this season. They return to 3rd in the cinch Premiership table as the Staggies’ first defeat under new boss Derek Adams means they remain in 8th.
Saints boss Stephen Robinson was full of praise for Jonah Ayunga after netting for the first time since November 2022. He said:
“When you’re out injured it’s a lonely place.
“A big mention for Jonah (Ayunga) and a special mention Gerry Docherty (Physio) as well who has been with him and Gary McCall (Strength and Conditioning Coach).
“They’ve spent hours trying to get him to this level. It’s testament to how hard he’s worked and an example to anyone who is out with a long-term injury at the club.
“He’s got his just rewards towards today. I’m delighted for him today.”
Conversely, Ross County manager Derek Adams was not as pleased with his players this afternoon. He added:
“I was a wee bit disappointed in the way that we didn’t take the game. When we were 2-0 down we were still trying to pass it, forgetting that the object of the game is to score goals.
“That was a wee bit disappointing but, today, we didn’t play as well as we can do, or have done. We didn’t deserve to win the game today.”
