Louis van Gaal Gives Injury Update

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Manchester United will travel to Watford tomorrow without 6 key players due to injury problems.

During his press conference this morning van Gaal said Wayne Rooney is ill, while Michael Carrick and Anthony Martial won’t be fit due to injuries they received while playing mid-week for their countries. Antonio Valencia is recovering from surgery on his foot, Marouane Fellaini is also injured and Luke Shaw is still out following his leg break against PSV.

The injuries to Rooney and Martial could mean youngster James Wilson is given a starting role upfront, however van Gaal believes he won’t be able to play the full 90 minutes.

“Wilson is okay after the international break. He can play but he cannot play a whole match because he doesn’t have the rhythm of the game.”

The Man United boss also confirmed Martial’s injured wasn’t as bad as many feared, he said,

“It’s not so heavy as everybody has written in the media, but he cannot play against Watford,”

It’s possible Martial may return for the Champions League game against PSV according to van Gaal,

“Maybe PSV for Martial but it’s not certain, and I think Rooney shall also play then because illness is not something of many days. And Valencia, of course, has been operated on before the international break already, then Shaw, so we have five injured players, and that’s a lot.”
