Ross County were moments from securing their top flight status before St Johnstone’s Adama Sidibeh fired in an equaliser.
With one game left to play Craig Levein’s side sit 11th, 2 points behind 10th place Ross County who have amassed 34 points.
The team finishing in 11th will take on Raith Rovers or Partick Thistle in the Premiership play-off Final.
Raith Rovers have a slender 2-1 lead in that tie, with the second leg to be played on Friday.
It was a first half goal from Hearts bound Yan Dhanda that gave the Staggies a deserved lead.
He lashed the ball into the top left hand corner from inside the box on the 28th minute after a pass from Jordan White.
St Johnstone’s only real chance of the half came through Stevie May’s right footed shot after he burst into the box but it was easily held by Mitov.
Ross County dominated the second half but they couldn’t add to their lead against a dismal St Johnstone.
And it looked like the Dingwall side were heading for top flight survival before Adama Sidibeh popped up with a late equaliser after a hopeful ball into the box from Graham Carey.
The fight to avoid a relegation play off will go down to the last game of the season with St Johnstone facing Motherwell away and Ross County home to Aberdeen.
