Dundee and Motherwell are both searching for their first William Hill Premiership win of the season after battling to a 1-1 draw at Dens Park.

Tawanda Maswanhise opened the scoring for the Steelmen in a first half dominated by the visitors, but Dundee equalised at the start of the second period through defender Luke Graham.

Both sides had further chances before Dark Blues midfielder Yan Dhanda was shown a straight red card late on.

Dundee made just two changes after the derby defeat to Dundee United before the international break, with Fin Robertson and Tony Yogane coming in at the expense of Callum Jones and Imari Samuels who dropped to the bench.

Motherwell made three alterations to the side which drew with Kilmarnock at Fir Park a fortnight ago, with deadline-day Celtic loan signing Stephen Walsh handed a start along with Regan Charles-Cook. John Koutroumbis also came back in with Stephen O’Donnell, Paul McGinn and Elijah Just missing out.

The Steelmen had a chance in the eighth minute with Apostolos Stamatelopoulos finding himself with time and space, but his downward header was easily gathered by home goalkeeper Jon McCracken.

Defensive dithering from Dundee then resulted in a sight of goal for Maswanhise, however, his composure deserted him at the vital moment and his effort flew wide.

The home fans were becoming increasingly anxious as the visitors dominated possession.

And those fears were realised as the Steelmen deservedly took the lead in the 33rd minute. Maswanhise embarked on a dangerous run, skipping past Graham before clinically hitting a low shot through McCracken’s legs.

Motherwell threatened again, breaking quickly after a Dundee corner with Ibrahim Said racing down the right before picking out Emmanuel Longelo with a cross, but his shot was blocked.

The home fans delivered a barrage of boos as referee Calum Scott blew for half-time.

Dundee boss Steven Pressley brought on Cameron Congreve at half-time and the on-loan Swansea midfielder made an immediate impact just two minutes later, whipping in a superb ball from the right with Graham ghosting in at the back post to dispatch a clinical header past Calum Ward.

Shortly after, the Dark Blues came agonisingly close to taking the lead when Dhanda found Simon Murray with a great cross, but the striker’s diving header was just wide of the target.

Congreve then capitalised on a defensive error before teeing up Murray for what should have been an easy finish, however, the striker sent his shot past the post.

McCracken came to his side’s rescue in the 78th minute, making a vital save from a Maswanhise shot.

Seven minutes later, the home side were reduced to 10 men with Dhanda shown a straight red card for a tackle on Lukas Fadinger.
