Atletico Madrid and Spain winger Alex Baena is set for a spell on the sidelines following surgery for acute appendicitis.

The 24-year-old had missed Atletico’s past two matches with what was thought to have been a muscle injury.

However, the LaLiga club confirmed on Tuesday evening Baena had needed to go into hospital for a surgical procedure, with reports in Spain suggesting he could need around four weeks of recovery.

“Alex Baena underwent successful surgery for acute appendicitis this Tuesday, September 2,” a club statement read.

“The laparoscopic surgery was completely normal, and the player is doing well.

“However, he will remain hospitalised for the next few hours awaiting discharge. His progress is pending before he can return to training.”

Atletico have failed to register a win from their opening three LaLiga matches, and are set to play Liverpool in the Champions League after the international break on September 17.
