Koji Miyoshi’s late equaliser denied Bayer Leverkusen victory in a 1-1 draw and clinched bottom club Bochum just their second Bundesliga point of the season.
Patrik Schick had fired Leverkusen into a half-time lead, but Japan winger Miyoshi struck in the 89th minute to leave Xabi Alonso’s reigning champions with just one win in their last six games in all competitions.
Bochum were first to threaten when Moritz Broschinski’s fizzing low shot was well saved by Lukas Hradecky before Schick fired Leverkusen into an 18th-minute lead.
Schick raced into the box on to Florian Wirtz’s through ball and buried a low finish into the bottom corner.
Leverkusen went close to a second when Schick teed up Jeremie Frimpong, who was denied from close range by Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes.
Broschinski went close again for Bochum before the break when he fired straight at Hradecky and the home side continued to trouble Leverkusen after the restart.
Gerrit Holtmann and Broschinski were off target and while Schick headed wide from Alex Grimaldo’s cross, chances dried up for both sides.
Victor Boniface replaced Schick with 13 minutes remaining and the Nigeria striker headed Grimaldo’s cross narrowly wide soon after and Wirtz saw his effort blocked.
But Miyoshi rescued Bochum, bidding to avoid a sixth straight league defeat, with two minutes remaining, lashing home from six yards after Dani de Wit’s effort had been blocked.
