A stoppage-time penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai denied Germany victory in their final Nations League group match as Hungary snatched a 1-1 draw.

Szoboszlai netted with a Panenka-style spot-kick to cancel out Felix Nmecha’s first international goal.

With Germany already assured of top spot in Group A3, boss Julian Nagelsmann made nine changes from the team which thrashed Bosnia-Herzegovina 7-0 on Saturday.

Only captain Joshua Kimmich and Robert Andrich retained their places in the starting line-up.

Yet despite all the changes Germany dominated the opening stages with Julian Brandt teeing up the first chance for Serge Gnabry, whose finish was wayward.

Hungary’s squad were shocked by the collapse of coach Adam Szalai, who was taken to hospital during their defeat by the Netherlands on Saturday.

Szalai is on the road to recovery, although the Hungarian Football Assocation confirmed he would not attend the match on the advice of the team doctor.

Nevertheless, the hosts did threaten midway through the first half when Andras Schafer’s fierce drive was beaten away by Germany keeper Alexander Nubel.

At the other end Benjamin Henrichs fired a free-kick over the crossbar and then sent in a tempting low cross towards Gnabry, but Marton Dardai slid in to clear the danger.

Leroy Sane’s mazy run gave Gnabry another opportunity but this time he shanked his shot on the turn wide.

But the best chance of the first half fell to Hungary’s Zsolt Nagy, who raced on to Barnabas Varga’s flick-on and forced another smart save from Nubel with a rising drive from the edge of the area.

After the break Gnabry’s lay-off set up substitute Robin Gosens, who had Germany’s first shot on target with an effort blocked by Denes Dibusz.

Brandt had the ball in the net after he was played through by Sane but he was correctly flagged offside.

Moments later Kai Havertz, just on as a substitute, crashed a first-time shot off the foot of a post.

Hungary still had September’s 5-0 thumping by Germany in Dusseldorf fresh in the memory.

Yet not only were they holding out this time, but they almost took the lead with a sweeping move only for Nubel to tip Varga’s shot wide of his far post.

However, they were breached in the 75th minute when Nico Schlotterbeck’s far-post header was kept out by Dibusz and Nmecha, on his full debut, poked home the rebound.

But Hungary kept pushing forward and were rewarded in the fifth minute of stoppage time when, after a VAR check, Robin Koch was penalised for handball and Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai coolly earned Hungary a point.
