Barcelona midfielder Gavi is set to undergo surgery on his injured right knee.

The 21-year-old Spain international has missed his side’s last four matches.

“Gavi underwent intense sporting stress tests after finishing his conservation course of treatment for the radial injury to the internal meniscus in his right knee,” read a Barca statement.

“The conclusion is that in order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action this Tuesday, Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination (keyhole surgery).”

Barca added that they will provide a further update on the player once the procedure has been carried out.

Meanwhile, team-mate Fermin Lopez will be sidelined for around three weeks due to a hip issue sustained during the closing stages of Sunday’s 3-0 LaLiga win over Getafe.

The midfielder was in visible pain at full-time before being consoled by head coach Hansi Flick as he left the pitch in tears.

The 22-year-old played the final half an hour of the match after replacing Ferran Torres, who scored two of Barca’s goals.

“Fermin Lopez has an iliopsoas muscle injury in his left leg,” read a club statement. “He will be out of action for around three weeks.”

Barca, who sit second in the table – two points below Real Madrid – after taking 13 points from a possible 15, travel to Real Oviedo on Thursday before hosting Real Sociedad on Sunday.
