Bayern Munich booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals after Harry Kane inspired them to a 2-0 victory over Leverkusen to see them through 5-0 on aggregate.

Leverkusen had a mountain to climb after Vincent Kompany’s side won their home leg 3-0, and it got steeper when the England captain opened the scoring in the 52nd minute.

Kane then turned provider for Alphonso Davies, who doubled Bayern’s advantage with 19 minutes remaining.

Bayern, in the last eight for the sixth straight season, will next face Inter Milan in their quest to reach the final at their home venue in Munich.

Jamal Musiala worked the ball to Kane in the 18-yard box early on, and the England man shouted for a penalty when he tried rounding Jonathan Tah but was instead brought down by the Leverkusen defender.

The interrupted effort was eventually clawed away by Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky which was followed by a good spell in front of Bayern’s goal by the hungry-looking hosts, who had a number of half-chances.

Kane tried again, bringing the ball down out of the air with an outstretched foot, but his effort was ultimately a comfortable save for Hradecky, who then watched Michael Olise’s attempt curl just past his left post.

Leverkusen’s back line held strong against another Bayern spell deep inside their half, and avoided conceding an opener when Kingsley Coman fired wide.

The hosts won a corner just after the half-hour, punched away by keeper Jonas Urbig, while Patrik Schick could not get the right angle on his header following an excellent Granit Xhaka delivery.

Leverkusen were growing into the game, however, earning a handful of corners and delivering more crosses into the area, but it remained goalless at the break.

Kane broke the deadlock from a free-kick seven minutes after the restart.

It was taken by Joshua Kimmich then poorly read by Schick, who flailed at the ball with an outstretched leg before it landed in front of Kane, who tapped home from point-blank range.

Jeremie Frimpong tried to sneak an equaliser past Urbig low at his near post, and the Bayern keeper was soon called back into action to stop Schick from heading home from Frimpong’s delivery.

Davies then padded Bayern’s lead, meeting a perfectly-weighted pass from Kane on the half-volley, the diving Hradecky getting a hand on the ball but unable to keep it out.

Musiala twice came within inches of adding his own name to the scoresheet, but caught the woodwork with both efforts.
