Sporting Lisbon have promoted Joao Pereira from within their existing coaching set-up to replace Ruben Amorim.
Amorim signed off in his final game with a 4-2 victory over Braga on Sunday ahead of joining Manchester United and the Portuguese league leaders wasted no time in elevating Pereira from his role with the B team.
“A new armband, the same ambition. Joao Pereira is the new coach of Sporting CP,” the club posted on X.
Pereira is a former Portugal international who started his career at Benfica but had three spells at Sporting as a player, the last in 2021 actually coming under Amorim.
The 40-year-old’s backroom staff includes Jose Caldeira, Antonio Pina, Hugo Tecelao and former team-mate Luis Neto, who retired from playing last season.
Pereira takes over with Sporting six points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga, having won all 11 matches so far, and second in the Champions League table.
