Former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand has been appointed as the new coach of Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga club have announced.

Hjulmand succeeds Erik ten Hag, who was sacked last week after just three competitive games in charge.

It is Hjulmand’s first job since stepping down from his post with his native Denmark after Euro 2024.

His first game will be Friday’s home clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sporting director Simon Rolfes said in a statement the 53-year-old was the “right person” to develop Leverkusen “into a top team that will strive for the most ambitious national and international goals”.

Hjulmand led Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, where they lost to England, and they reached the last 16 of the most recent edition.

He has previous experience of the German game having been in charge of Mainz during the 2014-15 season.

Former Manchester United manager Ten Hag was only appointed in July after the club lost 2024 Bundesliga-winning boss Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.

The Dutchman lasted just 98 days as a host of internal issues were compounded by poor early-season form.

Hjulmand said: “It’s an honour to be entrusted with such a team. I’m very motivated by the task of shaping the future of Bayer Leverkusen after outstanding successes in the past, with both proven and exciting new players.”
