Antoine Griezmann scored his 200th goal for Atletico Madrid as they made light of Diego Simeone’s ban to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in the Champions League.

The former France international struck in first-half added time in his 454th match for his side’s third goal but VAR ruled out what would have been his second midway though the second half.

Simeone was absent from the touchline and dressing room after being suspended for his behaviour at Anfield a fortnight ago, where he argued with officials and fans before being sent off.

However, his team did not suffer as they went ahead after just four minutes through Giacomo Raspadori.

The head coach’s son Giuliani Simeone’s cutback to the near post was missed by Julian Alvarez but rolled through to Raspadori who turned home his first goal since arriving from Napoli in the summer.

Simeone and Griezmann, twice, were both denied by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos with Griezmann also having a close-range header blocked before Atleti finally doubled their lead in the 33rd minute.

Griezmann aimed a flick at the inswinging corner and that was enough to distract the goalkeeper, whose attempt at a block only diverted the ball into the path of Robin Le Normand to score score from close range.

But Griezmann was not to be denied and when Alvarez cut in from the left to pull the ball back from the byline the Frenchman swept home before running away to celebrate by lifting a shirt with ‘Griezmann 200’ on the back.

His 67th-minute effort may have been cancelled out but three minutes later Simeone headed in a cross from Alvarez, who got on the scoresheet himself with an 82nd-minute penalty.
