Mark Lawwell, Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment at Celtic, has resigned from the club to pursue other football opportunities.

Joe Dudgeon, Lead First Team Scout, who joined Celtic from the City Group last year, has also resigned from his position.

Lawwell joined Celtic in July 2022 after a decade at the City Group where he rose to become Head of CFG Scouting and Recruitment within the global structure that included Manchester City, Girona and Yokohama F. Marinos. It was there that he worked closely with Ange Postecoglou.

That relationship was solidified when he joined Celtic under Postecoglou’s reign. The former Celtic manager who is now at Tottenham Hotspur said then: “I was very keen for Mark to join the club and clearly I am delighted that he has accepted this important role and that we have been able to bring him to Celtic.

“Mark is someone who I worked closely with throughout my four years at Marinos and we developed great trust and an excellent working relationship.”

When Postecoglou left Celtic for Spurs last summer, Lawwell, a life-long Celtic fan, remained in Glasgow, but has now decided to step down.

Dudgeon, an ex-professional player for Manchester United and Hull City, and now a highly rated talent identifier, joined Celtic shortly after Mark in November 2022 following a successful working relationship together at City Football Group.

A source close to the club said: “Between them, Mark and Joe had spent 15 years at the City Football Group, renowned as ‘the best organisation in world football, before they were recruited by Celtic.

“Mark had worked closely with Ange for four years at the City Group and it is widely understood he identified and strongly recommended him to become the Celtic manager in the summer of 2022.

“Ange rarely takes his backroom team with him when he joins a new club and Mark was the only staff member he brought to Celtic, as he rated him as one of the best recruitment guys in the business.

“They worked very closely together and there’s a great deal of mutual respect between them.

“With Ange moving on in the summer and the January transfer window now closed, Mark and Joe have decided the time is right to move on.’

They have both been placed on gardening leave until the end of the season.
