Bayern Munich to dedicate Bundesliga clash with Hoffenheim to Franz Beckenbauer

Bayern Munich will dedicate Friday’s Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim to Franz Beckenbauer.

The former Bayern captain and club president, who won the World Cup for West Germany as a player and manager and was known throughout football as ‘Der Kaiser’, died on Sunday at the age of 78.

“FC Bayern is dedicating tonight’s match against Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena to the memory of Franz Beckenbauer,” read a club statement.

“In addition to a minute’s silence, which will be held in all German stadiums on this matchday, and both teams wearing black armbands, the Kaiser will be honoured through numerous acts.”

Bayern players will warm up with Beckenbauer’s number five shirt and wear training jackets from his playing era, while child mascots for both teams will also be similarly dressed.

Beckenbauer’s own song ‘Gute Freunde’ will be played over the stadium’s loudspeakers as the squads walk out and again, should Bayern score.

A Beckenbauer banner will adorn the centre circle ahead of kick-off and the Bayern players will wear special jerseys with ‘Danke Franz’ – ‘Thank you Franz’ – printed on them.

Videos in memory of Beckenbauer will be played on the Allianz Arena screen and the stadium, as on previous evenings, will be illuminated with the words ‘Danke Franz’.

Bayern’s Legends team, who are playing at an indoor tournament in Frankfurt at the same time, will also wear black armbands.
