Fran Alonso danced a jig of delight on the touchline as Celtic eased past a Glasgow City who wilted the longer this game went on.

Goals from Natalie Ross, Amy Gallacher and Kit Loferski gave them a comfortable win – for the second time this season – over the reigning SWPL champions.

It sets up a semi-final date in the Sky Sports Cup, although Celtic will have to wait until the other three games have bee played on Sunday afternoon before they discover who is up next for them.

Celtic had taken an early grip of the game with an early header from Natalie Ross with the hosts then going on to dominate. They ought to have had a second – Shen Megyu’s corner was flapped into the net by City keeper Lee Gibson with the ‘goal’ chopped off because of a perceived foul on the stopper by Paula Partido.

City ended the opening period looking to get back on level terms with Brenna Lovera denied by a strong save from Kelsey Daugherty after going through before Emily Wheelan sent a header over the bar after Lauren Davidson had whipped an inviting ball into the box.

Celtic started the second period as they had started the first with further goals following.

Ross turned provider for the second as a corner from Ross was met by a tentative punch from Gibson. It landed straight at the feet of Gallacher who simply converted from close range.

As City crumbled, Celtic turned the screw. Loferski added their third, the pick of the bunch, as she outpaced Kenzi Weir before lifting the ball from just inside the box over the advancing Gibson with the outside of her right boot.

Alonso, not shy when it comes to touchline exuberance, was beside himself as he joined in with the Celtic singing. He’ll be optimistic this opens the door to further celebrations.
