Fortuna Dusseldorf boosted their hopes of a return to the Bundesliga after a 3-0 win over Bochum in the relegation play-off.

Bundesliga side Bochum shot themselves in the foot in the 13th minute as Phillip Hofmann put through his own goal following a corner.

Second division Dusseldorf doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Felix Klaus’ first-time effort inside the area rounded off a perfect counter-attack and Yannik Engelhardt scored eight minutes from time to give Dusseldorf a healthy lead going into the second-leg.

Claudio Ranieri’s last game as manager before retirement ended in heartbreak after Arthur Melo scored a last-gasp penalty to earn Fiorentina a 3-2 victory over Cagliari.

Giacomo Bonaventura gave Fiorentina a half-time lead but Cagliari were on level terms thanks to Alessandro Deiola’s strike before Kingstone Mutandwa put them 2-1 to the good with five minutes remaining.

But, the action did not stop there – the Europa Conference League finalists drew on level terms in the 89th minute thanks to Nicolas Gonzalez and there was late drama when Fiorentina were given a 103rd-minute penalty and Melo stuck it away with the last kick of the game.
